We may believe only creative jobs, such as graphic artists, writers, and teachers, would use portfolios. This is not always true. Portfolios are becoming common tools for many types of job seekers.
The portfolio is an element of your interview. You can use it to demonstrate your strengths with examples of your best work. Assembling your portfolio is a large task, but once you have completed it, you can update it quite easily.
The focus for your portfolio and resume is a convincing description of what you offer an employer. Introducing yourself, your strengths, and your professional ambitions are important steps. What are your strengths and skills?
Getting the Attention, You Deserve
Resumes are not entertaining reading. They are normally just timelines of facts. So building one that helps you to stand out from other candidates takes some work. Make certain your spelling is flawless, grammar is perfect, and initial statements capture the reader’s attention. How else can you make your resume stand out from a stack of others?
Your resume and portfolio are communication tools that speak for you. In the process of creating them, you will recall accomplishments you might have forgotten. It will prompt you to pre-answer tough questions, like “Why I should hire you?”. The process can remind you of contributions you have made and help you view your experiences in an objective way.
Some people believe you can just sit for an hour and write a good resume, but it’s not true. The best resumes come from resume-writing education and allowing yourself the freedom to create a powerful document. You will find, as you probably did while working on the resume worksheet pre-assignment, that this process involves creating many notes and lots of rewriting. Once you have all your final notes and material organized, you can complete a resume that is comprehensive and valuable. Also, it won’t appear you built your resume from a generic template. This careful planning and assembly will make your resume stand out.
How do you describe yourself
You will focus on your top skills as your primary statements. They will become the central ideas behind your resume, cover letter, and portfolio. You should craft your language with bold language including strong verbs and adjectives. Include measurements and achievements to enhance your achievements. Your well-written resume helps employers understand how you perform at work and your value to their organization.
Imagine if you were a medical transcription clerk in your last position. Compare these two statements and determine which one is stronger:
o Responsible for transcribing medical file updates from doctor’s recorded messages
o Consistently transcribed physician’s medical files at 65 words per minute with 99.25% accuracy
Next, imagine you were a chauffeur. Decide which of these two statements is stronger:
o Safely operated a limousine without an accident
o Operated two types of vehicles – sedan and mini-van. Commended for customer service excellence six times per year on average.
A few good tips to start
Use verbs only one time. If you write “accomplished” many times, it isn’t interesting to the reader. Use a variety of language.
Be truthful and minimize industry jargon. You might think you are using standard language, but the resume screener many not understand your professional terminology. Explain yourself clearly to any potential reader.
Strong resumes are a collection of short, impactful sentences. Limit sentences to between 15 and 20 words. If sentences are too long, divide them into simpler ones. If they seem too short and plain, vary your format to combine sentences with bulleted lists.
Use common words to communicate clearly and precisely. Avoid too-sophisticated vocabulary. For example, don’t use “myriad” when “many” will accomplish the same thought and not confuse the reader.
Eliminate pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.) and articles (a, the) to keep statements fresh and reduce paper space. This style is more professional. That said, consider your intended audience when choosing your writing approach.

Creating an Eye – Catching Package
It’s your personal brand
When you search the internet for resume and portfolio information, you will probably also find information about branding. Branding is critical for large companies like Toyota and Apple and can also be beneficial to you. Branding means you present yourself as a professional “package.” Just as you recognize the Apple logo anywhere in the worldred, your experience should be immediately associated with you when someone scans your resume or portfolio.
Think about using specific resume formats for different roles. Your resume, cover letter, and references should all look like they came from the same source and they are unique to you. With some thought, you can create a polished format using Microsoft Word formatting.
You might try putting your portfolio in a binder with a window front. You can use the same window design for your cover page to create a rich, expert, and branded look. Your header should look identical on all documents. Your margins, borders, and bullet spacing should be the same as well.
If you use color or logos, they must be identical on all your documents.
To keep your documents consistent, print all your documents on high-quality, white paper. Avoid using colored paper or card stock.
Types of resumes
You can choose from several layout formats for your resume:
o Timeline
o Practical
o Hybrid
There is no “right” way to design your resume. You are enticing a reader you haven’t met yet and most hiring managers don’t enjoy reading resumes in the first place. As you study the following formats, remember one is no better than another. Your layout will depend on your specific needs.
